The Hummingbird and the Fire is a narrated, family concert presented by the Prince George Symphony Orchestra.
This multimedia concert will be held at the Canfor Theatre at UNBC on April 24th, and combines music from Gustav Mahler with a Quechua story.
Ken Hall with the Symphony Orchestra described what this story is all about.
“It’s a story about a hummingbird who tries to put out a forest fire one beak of water at a time. It’s a nice little parable about both the dangers of climate change, and also the difficulties of making big societal changes all by yourself, and how that can look.”
Duncan Fox, an English/Portuguese composer, and Darin James Corbiere, an Anishinaabe artist and storyteller also collaborated on the project.
“[Fox] is adapting the show along with Darin to accommodate our sort of chamber orchestra setup, which is what we use for our children’s concerts. So it’s not a full Mahler orchestra, which might be 90 people,” added Hall.
Two preview shows will be held in local schools on April 22nd, and a recording will be made available for District 57 schools, retirement homes, and Indigenous community organizations.
