Fewer animals were adopted through the BC SPCA during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic than the first.
According to the BC SPCA, there were 8,704 animals adopted in 2021, compared to 10,146 in 2020.
The same pattern was true in Prince George. In the Northern Capital, 228 animals were adopted in 2021, compared to 319 in 2020.
However, General Manager of Community Relations, Lorie Chortyk said these numbers don’t really relate to the pandemic.
“Adoption numbers are more closely tied to the number of incoming animals,” Chortyk said.
“These numbers go down each year through the success of spay and neuter programs. The demand for animals was very high during the pandemic, but our actual adoptions would be tied to the number of homeless animals we had in our shelters available for adoption.”
