UNBC offering international learning opportunities

Students at UNBC will have an opportunity to take their studies outside of Canada.

The University is offering a grant to help students pay for travel, living, and academic expenses while participating in international studies.

“It’s quite open and quite flexible, the only requirement is that it has to earn UNBC credits,” said Chair of the Department of Global and International Studies Dr. Jacqueline Holler.

“That could include, for example an internship that a student might want to do with someone in another part of the world, it can include a field school organized by UNBC, It can include a traditional exchange program with one of our exchange partners. Really the sky is the limit, and our goal is to be as flexible as possible.”

The grants can range from $1,000 to $10,000 for travel taking place between 2022 and 2026.

It comes from $500,000 in competitive grant funding from the federal government’s new Global Skills Opportunity program.

The funding is open to all Canadian undergraduate students.

“We have additional supports we can put in place for Indigenous students, low income students, or students with disabilities. We really want to make this as accessible as possible,” Holler added.

“The objective of Travelling Knowledges is to facilitate travel so students can bring their newfound knowledge and experience back to Canada and their communities,” says First Nations Studies Associate Professor and affiliated faculty member with the Department of Global and International Studies Dr. Agnieszka Pawlowska-Mainville.

The University will be hosting an information session on the program on March 11th, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m..
