Prince George comes together to celebrate Northern BC’s Olympians

Around 200 people braved cold and snow in Prince George’s Canada Games Plaza to celebrate Northern BC’s Olympians.

Sarah Beaudry, Emily Dickson, and two-time Olympic bronze medalist Meryeta O’Dine were honoured during the Olympic Celebration.

Beaudry and Dickson were not in attendance because of their competition schedule.

O’Dine addressed the crowd, and shared her love for the northern capital.

“We hear a lot of people move, especially athletes, in your career for whatever,” O’Dine said.

“It’s our little hole, but we make it exactly what it is. I wouldn’t be where I am today without living and growing up at Tabor Mountain.”

O’Dine was also gifted with a challenge coin from Cariboo-Prince George MP Todd Doherty.

O’Dine had her own gift to give to Doherty, one of the bibs she wore during the Beijing Olympics.

Meryeta’s mother, Virginia O’Dine, said she was happy to see the community come together to celebrate the athletes.

“I’m super happy we’re starting to see the end of COVID regulations, and that we can get people together again,” Virginia said.

Virginia added that Meryeta’s still has a two more World Cup races to go on their circut, and that she’s headed out again on Monday. She said her next races are in Austria and Switzerland.

“I was so happy that we had the turnout, Prince George can stand tall,” Virginia said.
