Pink Shirt Day events begin in PG leading up to Feb.23

One in five children are affected by bullying.

That’s according to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern BC (BigsNBC), who are preparing for the 10th annual Pink Shirt Day slated for next Wednesday (Feb.23rd), with some promotions starting today (Feb.16th) in Prince George.

Pink Shirt Day is a way to promote kindness, as well as stand against bullying, but some parts of the community are showing their support this week.

“Big Brothers Big Sisters is involved in this fundraiser because our proactive mentoring programs have been proven to reduce bullying in our schools,” said Jane Gauthier with BigsNBC.

Shirts, masks, and pink items are being sold, and an online auction is being held to support these programs.

“We serve around 200 children a year, in a variety of different programs. And then, of course we’re hoping to increase that number every year, year over year. And those programs take place both in person and virtually in a one to one setting, as well as a group setting.”

A number of businesses will be selling pink items, as well as giving discounts for wearing pink, and a full list can be found on the BigsNBC website.

An online auction will also start on Friday (Feb 18th).

“So it’s starting at 10am on Friday, and then goes until 8pm on the Friday after, so the 25th. The auction is available, so you can look and view the items you can bid on now, and as soon as it hits 10am on Friday you can start bidding.”
