Despite the warm weather, the outdoor Ice Disco at the Oval event in Prince George continued as planned last night (Saturday).
Just over $30,000 was raised for the Prince George Hospice Palliative Care Society, and almost 2000 people showed up to the event.
That surpassed the initial fundraising goal of $20,000.
Event Producer and Organizer Kyle Sampson said it wouldn’t be possible without the Ice Oval staff.
“Don’t get me wrong, I was also afraid about the warm weather. Our ice wasn’t perfect, but the Ice Oval crew were amazing, and they were able to ensure that it was skate-able for us yesterday, which was obviously priority number one in pulling the event off.”
Sampson said the turnout shows that residents are looking to support events.
“We’re awfully optimistic now that we’re on the backend of this thing. This is supposed to be the ice breaker of events officially now. Like I said, it’s a big indicator of people’s desire to get out, have fun, and I really think Prince George is going to support events in a big way over the next year.”
He added that the event partners, the corporate partners and sponsors, and the public all make an event like this successful.
Sampson also noted that the Ice Oval is raising money as well to refrigerate their ice, and prevent potential mid season closures due to warm winter weather.
