PG could see funding to boost the tourism sector

The Ministry of Tourism announced more than $9.3 million will go towards the tourism sector in BC over the next two years.

Chief Executive Officer of Tourism PG Colin Carson said it’s too early to say if Prince George will see that money, but notes that funding is much needed for the tourism sector.

“I think the first part of the announcement they’re talking about, the Business Events and Conference Restart Fund, I think that it’s much needed for the tourism industry.”

“I think if you’re looking at Prince George as a destination for hosting those type of events, like the Prince George Conference and Civic Centre is a huge economic driver for those. We see a lot of out of town visitation for people attending events specifically there, but also in hotels, and in the House of Ancestors “Uda Dune Baiyoh”, as well as up in UNBC.”

He added that he hopes that we can get some of that funding, as he thinks it’ll kickstart events coming back to the city.

Carson noted that the Civic Centre is still being used as a vaccination clinic, and that until it opens up we may not see the really big events for a while.

Tourism and hospitality will also see funding going towards human resource specialists, and Carson said this will hopefully help businesses that have been having a hard time bringing in workers.

“I think that’s an area where the industry could use some support in that sense. Specifically in the hospitality industry, the hotels especially have been really struggling with attracting employees.”
