Football courses kickoff in PG secondary schools

2022 could be the year for football in Prince George.

The Prince George Kodiaks make their BC Football Conference debut, and more football opportunities are coming to kids at College Heights and Shas Ti Kelly Road Secondary Schools.

Both schools offer a Football 11 course, and that program is now being expanded for grades 10 and 12.

The teachers of the courses, Grant Erickson and Steve Porter gave a presentation at last week’s School District 57 meeting, and noted that these added courses allow students to take this course every year and get credit for it.

“Kids are going to have those opportunities at the next level, so we really wanted to just open students eyes to the opportunities that go beyond high school, and just introduce them to year long training,” said Porter.

The courses will touch on multiple aspects of football, especially with the differences between American and Canadian football.

“We’re in a really unique position in BC, where high school is American, but yet kids will be competing in other places if they go to U sports, or junior and Canadian football. So just understanding what both of those sports actually look like, and understanding the differences in rules and everything.”

Kids will also be introduced to weight training and nutrition.

“There’s lots of different angles to the course. There’s classroom situations, there’s weight training, there’s on field stuff,” said Erickson.

Porter noted that anyone can take the course, adding opportunities in women’s football are growing.

This will be the first time the non-contact course will be offered since 2019.
