Youth sports tournaments return to BC

Public Health Orders for BC are slowly starting to loosen across the province.

Doctor Bonnie Henry announced that sports tournaments for children and youth will resume effective on Tuesday (Feb.1st).

“I know that this is an important time of the year for many different sports, and especially team sports. And we’ve been working with organizers and with viaSport to make sure that this can be done in a safe way.”

Henry added adult tournaments remain paused for now.

The BC Vaccine Card will remain in effect until June 30th, and Henry noted that could change if the situation improves.

“It will continue to apply to people over the age of twelve. If we are in a better place before June 30th however, we will work to make adjustments early.”

Henry noted that the Vaccine Card is an important tool to curb the spread of COVID-19.

She added that she expects this summer to be a much gentler one than previous pandemic years.

Meanwhile, Minister of Health Adrian Dix noted that 48,000 people aged 70 and over have not booked their booster shot after getting an invitation.

“It is urgent for them to get vaccinated as they are much, much more likely to be hospitalized if they acquire COVID-19.”

He added that there are 10,868,720 tests between today and the middle of February on their way to BC, which is less than the 15,719,000 that were originally expected on Friday.
