Automatic Vehicle Location technology coming to PG buses this year

BC Transit is implementing new technology into their buses to allow riders to plan their trips better.

The Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) technology allows riders to track buses in real time through the Transit app.

The technology has already been implemented in Victoria, BC Transit’s Director of Regional Operations Stephen Anderson says the feedback they’ve received there has been positive.

“The strong feedback from our customers in these operations like Victoria, is it’s nice they know through the Transit app to identify on their routes the predicted arrival times, and that has been a huge bonus to them to have that information,” Anderson said.

“Also what we’ve enjoyed having with this technology is our onboard automated stop announcements that call out stops to customers who are riding a bus, and there will be a visual aid as well.”

According to Anderson, the technology works through GPS systems on the bus, and sends signals to show where the bus is on the app.

Anderson said BC Transit is planning on installing the AVL technology in the Prince George buses in the Summer months of this year.
