The next General Local Election in Prince George isn’t scheduled until October 15th, 2022, but the City has chosen the Chief and Deputy Chief Election Officers so they can get ready for voting day.
The topic was brought up during Monday’s (January 1oth) City Council meeting, and Manager of Legislative Services Maureen Connelly was chosen as the Chief Election Officer, and Supervisor of Information Joan Switzer was chosen as the Deputy.
“We are bringing these suggested appointments to you at this time so staff can start preparing for the election, and securing voting places, hiring staff, and importantly reviewing bylaws and administrative procedures for the upcoming election,” said City Manager Walter Babicz.
Councillor Cori Ramsay brought up a consideration that’s in the budget to increase funds by $30,000 to rent voting equipment.
“So I’m just wondering why we would be renting and not purchasing? Is that a more fiscally responsible way of utilizing machines that we only use so often?”
Connelly explained that the voting equipment in the City’s possession was 20 years old, and that leasing some new voting equipment would allow them to update their technology.
It was also explained that the City and School District 57 have a partnership during election season where they assist each other, the district provides voting places at schools, and the City provides their technology.
