“We just want to make sure everyone’s aware that it’s a long-term commitment.”
Prince George Humane Society Executive Director Angela McLaren had that message for people who may be thinking of giving a pet for a Christmas present this year.
“We don’t particularly encourage it over Christmas, we do understand sometimes families want to give kittens and puppies over Christmas.”
She said if people are deciding to give a pet for Christmas, everyone in the household should be on the same page, and everybody is in agreement about the responsibility that comes with owning a pet.
McLaren added if someone is giving to someone else, the person receiving the animal should be the one to pick out the pet to ensure a good match.
In addition, she said the PG Humane Society has a program called “Home for the Holidays” to make sure a pet is a good fit for the family.
“What that means is that during the Christmas season, you can take an animal home with you and foster it during that period of time,” McLaren explained.
“What we often find is people end up keeping those animals, and it’s an opportunity to take an animal into your home and see if it’s something you want to do.”
McLaren said anyone interested in the program can go to the PG Humane Society’s website.
