The Prince George branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is having another Remembrance Day that will be slightly adjusted due to the ongoing pandemic.
The ceremony is taking place outside at the Cenotaph at City Hall at 10:30 am, but will also be available online and on TV.
Sheldon Clare with the Legion said regardless of the current situation in the world, remembrance is still important.
“One of the main purposes of the Legion is to ensure remembrance, and that’s the memory of the fallen in Canada’s multiple wars, peacekeeping efforts, and various military operations around the world are remembered reverently.”
Clare said many people think of veterans as some of Canada’s older residents, but adds many younger Canadians are vets as well.
“We have a lot of new, younger veterans who served in Canadian Forces around the world, but also those who were in Afghanistan, who were in Bosnia, former Yugoslavia, and had served all across the world.”
He added that due to the pandemic the poppy campaign hasn’t been as effective as it has been in previous years, but adds people can still support veterans and the Legion by getting a Legion membership, or by supporting their events, kitchen, and bar.
Clare said that during Remembrance Day the Legion will be pretty packed and that they’re limited to 100 people capacity, but welcomes anyone to try and come down in the afternoon after the services.
The Prince George Legion was formed in 1926 and has been providing services to veterans and their families in the northern capital for 95 years.
