On a chilly November morning, the grade six students at Harwin Elementary School in Prince George were out planting tulip bulbs for a good reason.

The orange tulips were planted along the side of the school in honour of residential school children.

“This is actually very important because they were literally taken from their families and forced to learn not their culture, which is very sad,” said Julia, one of the students planting bulbs.

“It feels good to be acknowledging something that happened, even though it should have been acknowledged back then. But I feel good that we’re doing it now,” said another student, Hailey-Mae.

Principal Linda Mcgraw said it was important to plant these tulips as a reminder for students and staff, adding that their students have a ton of empathy and understanding around the subject of residential schools.

Other students recognized the beauty of the tulips, as well as the responsibility and hard work of planting those bulbs.

“I’m looking forward to them, because they are going to be beautiful and their colour will pop against the rest of the building, and we’ll work hard to grow them, raise them, and protect them,” said Grade six student Lily.
