Last night’s (Monday) Prince George City Council meeting saw another business hook up to the Downtown Renewable Energy System (DRES).
The Ramada Hotel will now be heated from a system that uses wood waste from the sawmill to heat water that’s pumped through underground piping.
The City states the fuel source is local, renewable, and carbon-neutral, and Councillor Cori Ramsay noted that it also helps bring in money to the city.
“We do get a lot of other benefits from this in terms of grant funding that comes to the city. I think it’s worth its weight in gold this year. We received a $10 million grant for the downtown pool, I think a $13 million grant for the Aquatic Centre,” said Ramsay.
This also marks the first private business to hook up to the DRES.
Councillor Murry Krause said that this system also helps the city stand out.
“It’s a great value to the city in terms of receiving grants, but it’s also great bragging rights. I know we have shown this off to a number of people from across the nation and they’ve been very impressed.”
