Destroy the risk of identity theft with “Shred It” event happening this weekend

PG residents can get rid of their unneeded personal documents while helping out a good cause at the Crimestopper’s Shred-It event tomorrow (Saturday) in the Prince George Secondary School Parking Lot.

Everyone is invited to bring down their documents and get them shredded, which Ron Polillo Vice President of Northern BC Crimestoppers says is a pretty popular event.

“It’s a drive-thru event at PGSS parking lot, we’ll be following all the Covid protocols, we’ll ask people to stay in their vehicles and wear masks and come to PGSS anytime between 10 am and 2 pm to shred their personal and important documents for donation to Northern BC Crimestoppers,” he explained.

While a donation to Crimestoppers isn’t mandatory to partake in the event, a $5 donation which will go directly to the non-profit organization is reccomended.

Polillo says the event happens twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring.

Residents can attend the event to protect themselves from becoming a victim to identity theft.

“We know that identity theft is on the rise and this is a great way to prevent identity theft. It’s amazing, that information if it’s in the hands of people that want to do some damage and steal your identity can do real harm to you, individually,” he said.

He says criminals can use the information to steal money from unsuspecting individuals, so destroying these documents is really important.
