Preliminary numbers show fewer people decided to cast a ballot in this year’s Federal Election compared to the 2019 vote.
Two years ago, the Cariboo- Prince George riding had a 65% voter turnout, which slipped to 56% this year, a 9% drop.
Both Prince George- Peace River- Northern Rockies and Skeena-Bulkley Valley ridings saw an 11% decrease in their turnout.
Prince George- Peace River- Northern Rockies had a 69% voter turnout in 2019, and just a 58%Â this year.
Skeena- Bulkley Valley had a 52% voter turnout this year compared to 63% in 2019.
The lower voter turnout trend also continued on a national level.
Elections Canada reports that 58% of Canadians cast their ballot this year, compared to 66% in 2019.
Meanwhile, there are just under 1-million mail-in ballots that need to be counted starting today and while that is a record number, it is far less than the 5-million Elections Canada predicted would be filled out when the campaign started.
