UNBC and CNC are being proactive with upcoming vaccine card regulations

The BC Vaccine Card takes effect tomorrow (Monday), and post-secondary campuses have been proactive to make sure they could continue having in-class learning.

“Students have been very enthusiastic to be back, and as much as we had more than a third of our instruction happening face to face in about the last year and a half or so, this is an environment that helps bring people back and bring people together,” said Mark Karjaluoto, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications with the College of New Caledonia (CNC).

Karjaluoto says student housing requires students to prove they are vaccinated, and the vaccine card will be implemented in other areas, but classes will not be affected.

Interim President Geoff Payne at UNBC said areas like student housing, the Northern Sports Centre, and the student pub will require a vaccine card to access, but classes and seminars won’t be affected.

“I was up at move-in day talking to students moving into residence, as well as their parents. And the general vibe is everybody is very excited to at least get back to what everybody has been wanting for quite some time.”

“The order hasn’t officially dropped yet, but we have a good idea of what to expect. So what we did with housing and moving into residence, we were proactive, we asked for people’s vaccination status, and it went very smoothly.”

“At buildings such as the Northern Sports Centre we’re going to have to work with our members to ensure they understand because the sports centre is if not just a UNBC facility, we do have members of the public attending that building,” added Payne.

Post-secondary institutes are some of the many businesses that will require the vaccine card but are the only business that has some exceptions to the rule.
