$3 million Malaspina daycare project adds on $30,000

The daycare project at 8008 Malaspina Avenue in Prince George had $30,000 added to the $2,998,818 budget.

A report was given during Monday’s City Council meeting that determined the funding was needed for surveying the property.

“Specifically a geotechnical investigation is required to determine the subsurface conditions and obtain a recommendation on the type of foundation that’s needed for the facility. And secondly, a site survey to confirm the property lines and utilities,” explained City Manager Walter Babicz.

The project was given the green light on July 12th and is being funded by the BC Government.

If the project continues and is completed the $30,000 will also be covered by grant funding.

“This is $30,000 very well spent, that could easily have turned to over a million on the other end and caught us unawares. I appreciate the update to council in this timely manner and the opportunity to check-in at this point of its development,” said Councillor Terri McConnachie.

The new daycare will have room for 83 kids, and the construction of this project is being overseen by an external project management company to confirm costs and oversee the development.
