City of Prince George working to remove homeless encampments

The City of Prince George has filed an application in the BC Supreme Court requesting an order for the safe and orderly transition of the occupants at the encampments on George Street and Lower Patricia Boulevard.

Currently,  local officials are coordinating with BC Housing to prepare residents of the encampments to move and provide living accommodations that meet their needs.

A hearing is expected to be scheduled by the Court during the week of September 13, and Bylaw services are serving the required documents of both encampments, notifying them of the upcoming hearing.

However, the service of these documents does not mean the encampment occupants must leave immediately.

According to the city, these actions are not related to the proposed Safe Streets Bylaw which is on the agenda of Monday’s council meeting.

Back in July, residents in the Connaught Hill area living by the Lower Patricia Boulevard encampment started a petition advocating for the removal of the encampment after seeing an increase in criminal activity such as sexual assaults and open drug use.

Earlier this year, the city pursued an injunction to allow for the safe removal of unlawful encampments, and the occupants of another encampment on George Street in front of City Hall were served notice of trespass.
