Following the lead of the QMJHL and OHL, The Western Hockey League (WHL) has adopted a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy.
The league made the announcement today (Monday), noting that all players, operations staff, and office personnel along with officials must be fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to the start of the season, which begins on Friday, October 1st.
Additionally, General Managers, Coaches, Head Scouts, Directors, Player Personnel, Equipment Managers, On and Off-Ice Consultants including those working in the penalty box such as penalty box attendants and scorekeepers along with anyone who has contact with players on a regular basis will need to be vaccinated as well.
WHL Commissioner Ron Robison says given the travel restrictions in place, it is important for all staff and players to get vaccinated.
“The health and safety of our players and staff continue to be the number one priority for the WHL,” stated Robison in a news release. “The policy is designed to further protect our players and staff in the WHL from the potential risk of exposure to COVID-19.”
Meanwhile, the league is also urging all eligible individuals living in billet households to get fully vaccinated as well.
