The Association Advocating for Women and Children (AWAC) in downtown Prince George is inviting residents to honour the local homeless community at a BBQ and festival being hosted at Connaught Hill on Sunday.
From 10:30 am until 4:00 pm, the organization will be hosting a festival with live music, a worship presentation and a BBQÂ to honour those living in poverty in PG.
“It’s basically just a way to get back to the community, we just want to get together,” explained Kayla Krause, AWAC Outreach Worker.
Additionally, bouncy castles will be available along with games and prizes for children.
The BBQ festival is being organized by Mark Desouza, a local man in recovery from addiction who wanted to find a way to give back to the community.
“It just came in my heart, all of a sudden to give back to the community. I lived on the streets for a year and a half with a lot of the street guests and I understand the plights of being in addiction and the plights of trying to get out of addiction,” he explained.
Desouza says he was also inspired to give back while working alongside the Emergency Weather Response (EWR) team, providing food and water to downtown’s homeless population.
“I see many of the people I know and I just want to give back to them, to make them feel special, and hopefully they can see that there’s a different way of living other than staying in addiction and living on the streets,” he added.
Timbers Church will be playing live music and also hosting a worship service at the beginning of the festival, and the BBQ is scheduled to begin at around 12:30.
It will be a free event but AWAC is accepting donations to help cover the cost of the festivities.
