Oil spill response times under fire, again raising North coast concerns

Oil Spill concerns have been renewed after a very lackluster response to a spill in English Bay in Vancouver this week.

At a news conference earlier on Friday, Premier Christy Clark claimed that the federal government has not done enough to help protect BC waterways for a long time:

“This is not a problem specific to this government, this federal government. It has been a problem for decades in Canada, a lack of federal attention to our coast”

Meanwhile, Sierra Club BC coordinator Caitlyn Vernon says if something like this occurred in the North, response times wouldn’t matter:

“Industry considers 10-15% cleanup a success, and thats for conventional oil. So for the diluted bitumen that would be piped through the Northern Gateway pipeline and tankers we can expect even less”

Wednesdays small oil spill in Vancouver was believed to be leaking from a bulk tanker ship, and a response time in one of the busiest ports on the West coast was sluggish to say the least, as city officials were only notified by the Federal Coast Gaurd more than 12 hours later. With the environmental impact yet to be fully assessed.
