Prince George residents will not be gathering at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park on Canada Day.
That’s according to the Multicultural Heritage Society.
Spokesperson Marlies Greulich told MyPGNow.com this puts them in a tough spot financially.
“It is just a nightmare because we still have to pay the bills like the rent and utilities and everything else. There is no staff it has all been laid off but I mean we are in a financial crisis. Our vendors especially, are all non-profit groups and they count on this once-a-year event to finance their activities so it’s a catch 22. We have to battle through and I hope next year will be better.”
“We are still limited to 50 people. We cannot afford to put on an event for 50 people.”
Greulich also mentioned the decision to cancel had nothing to do with the remains of the 215 children discovered at a former residential school site in Kamloops.
“Absolutely not. Canada Day is a celebration of Canada’s birthday, it’s a totally different subject.”
Typically, the festival has a budget of $75,0o0 and each concession normally rakes in two to three grand.
Mayor Lyn Hall confirmed there are no plans to host fireworks at the Canada Games Plaza.
BC entered Step 2 of its reopening plan on Tuesday.
