Blackburn Community Association starts unique fundraiser to stay afloat

The Blackburn Community Centre is having trouble staying afloat during the pandemic and is getting closer to closing its doors for good.

Typically the centre hosts fitness programming like Zumba, Aerobics and Floor Hockey games but due to provincial health protocols, they haven’t been able to do it nearly as often.

Additionally, normally the centre hosts weddings every weekend from April through September as well, which brings in about $2,000 per weekend but most have been postponed for the same reason.

Blackburn Community Association Director, Mikayla Lees has created the Blackburn Weightloss Challenge which will be hosted throughout June with the hopes of raising $2,000 for the hall.

Teams of up to 4 people can join by paying a $100 registration fee, and the team who loses the most weight throughout June will win a number of different fitness-related prizes including a one-month membership to XConditioning for each team member.

“Participants will send me pictures of them on the scale on June 1st and the 30th and I’m going to be sending an identifying image to each team on those specific dates so I actually know that the picture of them standing on the scale is of the current day,” explained Lees.

Lees says she will use all the funding for fitness programming and is hoping to bring in instructors to teach different classes.

The money will also be used to pay for her wages so that she can keep hosting fundraisers until the Hall is allowed to host classes and weddings to bring in more income.

“Right now I’m really limited so I’m attempting to run a vendor market as well that has prizes at it so it’s really just to keep me working and the doors open so that hopefully we can start running the things that we used to be able to run,” she added.

She adds the fundraiser has already raised $600 of its $2,000 goal, and the registration fee can be sent via e-transfer to [email protected].
