Rising water levels causes closure of trail sections

Full map of closed areas (Photo provided by City of PG)

The City of Prince George has closed sections of the Heritage River Trail and Cottonwood Island Park due to the rising water levels in the Nechako and Fraser Rivers.

All three bridges of Cottonwood Island Park are closed along with the road into the canoe launch.

Additionally, the Heritage River Trail is closed from the trailhead east of the riverboat launch to Taylor Drive north of Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park.

Barricades and signs have been set up at appropriate locations to notify the public of the closed areas.

Meanwhile, parks and trails south of Taylor Drive along the Fraser River remain open.

The selected sections of the park and trail typically experience limited flooding each year during the spring freshet and river levels are currently measuring at their seasonal average.

The rivers are being continuously monitored and if necessary, additional sections of Cottonwood and the Heritage River Trail along with other parks along the river may be closed.

PG residents are being asked to avoid the impacted areas, follow park signs, and remain cautious around the rivers.
