The first bottles of wine were sold in a grocery store on Wednesday, during a pilot project unveiling at a Save-on-Foods in Surrey.
Justice Minister Suzanne Anton was on hand to make an address, and says they hope to see more grocery locations pop up soon.
She also believes the new liquor policies are an exciting change:
“This really is a milestone event for British Columbias progress in modernizing our liquor laws, it’s the combination of our public and industry consultations and the extensive policy work that has gone into updating our rather antiquated rules”
Anton also says these changes should see increased convenience and competition, while also leveling the playing field for liquor retailers, as they will all pay the same new wholesale price.
A new store within a store model will also gradually be phased in, which will allow grocers to offer a full range of alcoholic products.
No word yet on whether a local store will be providing the service.
