SD57 Director wins prestigious education award

SD57 Director of Instruction, Curriculum and Innovation Debbie Kaban is this year’s recipient of the Association of BC Deans of Education Teacher Educator of the Year Award.

Every year the award is given to an educator who has distinguished themselves in partnering with a teacher education program in BC.

The award recognizes Kaban’s work on UNBC’s renewed Bachelor of Education (BEd) curriculum.

“Debbie has been an amazing and unsung hero for our UNBC team and teacher candidates,” said UNBC Dean Faculty of Human and Health Sciences Dr. Shannon Wagner.

She played a significant role in enhancing the program and initiated the host schools model, which re-framed the way the UNBC BEd program approaches practicum placements.

During this time, she also worked with UNBC students and faculty members on day-to-day projects such as mentorship, curricular expertise, recruitment, and feedback to coaching UNBC educators.

“Her knowledge, passion, and dedication exemplify an exceptional partner to teacher education,” added Wagner.

According to the Association of BC Deans of Education, award recipients receive an engraved plaque and a $500 reward.
