Spruce Kings continue on ice success against Merritt

Special teams continue to prove key for the Prince George Spruce Kings.

A pair of first period power-plays goals from Corey Cunningham and Nick Rheaume paced the BCHL’s most northern franchise to a 3-0 victory over the Merritt Centennials on Sunday.

Undisciplined play was an issue throughout the game for the Centennials.

Local product Brandon Dent hit the showers early after a five-minute Blow to the Head Major came with an automatic game misconduct.

Kolton Cousins added the exclamation point for the Spruce Kings in the third period, shooting a puck past the outstretched body of Merritt netminder Josh Dias.

The Spruce Kings outshot the Centennials 38-23 overall, including a 2-for-7 showing on the man advantage.

Kobe Grant earned his second shutout in as many starts for PG.

PG is 5-0 against Merritt this season.

The Spruce Kings improve to 9-3-0-1 inside the Chilliwack Hub, three points ahead of the Chiefs for first place.

Both teams play each other again on Wednesday at 5pm from the Chilliwack Coliseum.
