PG Road Runners hope virtual races will broaden reach

The Prince George Road Runners season will be going online once again this year — starting with the Virtual Fun Run Series.

The races were planned and ready to go last year, however, due to the pandemic the club was forced to cancel events for the season.

“We decided we wanted to go ahead with something we knew would fit within the restrictions,” said President Michelle Cyr-Whiting.

“We just felt it was really important to give people something to do.”

She hopes the virtual series will inspire people to perhaps try it for the first time — especially if they were hesitant to in the first place.

“We’ll give them milestones along the way, from May to October,” Cyr-Whiting explained.

“We’re hearing that a lot, that people just need something to do.”

The Series will feature eight virtual runs, starting with the Mother’s Day Run in May and ending with the Joe Kelly Memorial Run in October.

Participants will have one week to complete the designated distance – either alone or with those in their bubble.

They are also able to choose when and where, their pace and distance, and whether they complete it all at once, or over several days.

Fun Run Challenge Weeks
May 9-15 Mother’s Day 5km

May 23-29 Hurt’n Bear 5km, 10km, or Hagen’s Half 21.1km

June 13-20 Beat the Bugs 5km or 10km

July 4-10 Blue Spruce 5km or 10km

August 22-29 Masich Mile 1 mile (fast or fun) or 5km

September 5-12 Labour Day Classic 5km, 8.5 mile or 17 mile

October 3-9 Centennial Relay 5km, 10km, or 30km

October 17-23 Joe Kelly Memorial Run 30min, 1hr, or 2hr

“We’re excited about maybe drawing people in who were not sure about trying out a race,” Cyr-Whiting said.

“We know gyms and studios are not at capacity so we are really looking to motivate people.”

Online Registration opens on Friday, March 26th and will remain open until the start of the last event on October 17th.
