Robbery attempt results in lengthy police standoff at problem residence

A report of a possible robbery with a firearm resulted in a police standoff lasting several hours yesterday (Wednesday).

Prince George RCMP received an abandoned 9-1-1 call at 12:19 pm from a residence on the 1600 block of 11th avenue.

Following the initial call, Mounties requested help from the North District Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Services to manage the situation.

“There was a lengthy police presence in the area due to several factors. There were many people in the house, in total there were 19 people,” said Constable Jennifer Cooper with the Prince George RCMP.

She also said a number of ‘open line’ 9-1-1 calls were received by the detachment.

“We knew they were 9-1-1 calls but we didn’t hear any talking,” Cooper explained.

While members were on scene, they found a handgun and a box of ammunition outside of the residence in plain sight.

Frontline members were already conducting a concurrent CDSA investigation into this residence.

On the strength of that information, combined with the discovery of the handgun and ammunition, Mounties obtained a search warrant for the home.

Once in the home, members located and seized two loaded and prohibited firearms, two imitation firearms, illegal body armor, several boxes of ammunition, scales, a small amount of drugs, cash, various edged weapons and some stolen property.

“Police did not make any arrests at this time, pending results from lab analysis on the drugs and firearms located. This is typical of an investigation of this nature,” said Cooper.

Police in Prince George are familiar with this residence, as it was already the subject of a recent CDSA search warrant executed by Prince George RCMP’s Downtown Safety Unit.

This investigation is in its beginning stages.

Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP or Crimestoppers.
