Highway 97 near Taylor closed as RCMP investigates fatal weekend collision

Highway 97 between Taylor and Dawson Creek remains closed today (Monday) after an early morning crash yesterday (Sunday) left one person dead.

Just before 7:00 am Dawson Creek RCMP were dispatched to the scene of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 97N (Alaska Highway) just south of 230 Road in South Taylor.

Attending officers found a tanker truck, which had been hauling crude oil, engulfed in flames.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the tanker truck was traveling north on the Alaska Highway and struck an unoccupied vehicle left parked or abandoned, on the side of the highway.

The tanker truck rolled over into the ditch as a result of the impact and immediately caught fire.

Unfortunately, the driver did not survive.

RCMP have been unable to make contact with the family of the driver.

The roadway will remain closed until at least Wednesday, December 16 at 12:00 pm.

The incident remains under investigation.

Mounties are seeking witnesses to the event and are also looking to speak with any drivers that may have noticed the pickup truck parked on the side of the road, prior to the crash.
