Petition started in opposition to sale of Prince George’s Watrous Park

Prince George residents in the Crescents neighborhood have started a petition to City Council to stop the sale of Watrous Park.

The Park, located at 377 Watrous Street and 388 Wainright Street, is also home to a playground and lawn bowling facility.

To facilitate the development of a 90 unit assisted living complex, the City is considering selling the park.

“I vehemently oppose the proposed sale of our beloved and well-used park,” said Natalie Warren, the petition’s creator, who also received a request for comment.

“Living within 30 meters of this city park and lawn bowling green, I have witnessed not only use of the site, but increased use, as new and young families move into the area.”

Warren argues the proposed change in zoning of the area would diminish the green space and recreational options, as well as result in increased traffic and noise pollution in the area.

In the petition, she also points out a new playground was installed in 2019.

“The City of Prince George has identified multiple sites across the Prince George community, several if which they identify as appropriate for this type of development in the Official Community Plan,” said Warren.

“These properties do not require the unnecessary expenditure of taxpayer dollars that will result from selling the property that is currently home to Watrous Park and the Lawn Bowling Club.”

At present, the petition has 197 signatures.

All comments regarding the proposed sale need to be submitted to the City by 5 pm on Friday (Nov 20th).
