Auto shops warn – Don’t rush to change those winter tires

The forecast might show highs in the double-digits and as you watch the snow melt away you might be thinking it’s time to beat the rush to get your tires changed.

However, Jarod Vansickle, Owner of Fort George Alignment, warns you’re not quite in the clear, yet.

“We have to keep in mind that our temperature in the evenings might still only be going below zero,” he says. “There’s a chance for black ice, with all this warm weather; The snow is melting, the water is accumulating and pooling on the roads, it can very quickly turn to black ice.

Vansickle points out that “It’s an invisible threat that we have to deal with this time of year.”

“A lot of people have nicer vehicles that come with specific summer-only use tires and they’re chomping at the bit to get them put on, because, yes, I get it, they look better, they perform better … in a summer condition, but the downfall is that we haven’t driven on them for six months or so,” he says. “We get ourselves into a situation where we’re going to have black ice or snow, we’re going to be in trouble.”

According to the week-long forecast that is likely, with lows down to -7, despite highs of 11 degrees.

Vansickle advises that winter tires are required by law until March 31st on local highways and studded tires need to be removed by April 30th.
