Prince George bus driver named a BC Transit superstar after saving a life

A Prince George transit operator is being recognized for saving a life.

Andy Szabo, who works for Prince George Transit Ltd, is one of six ‘Transit Superstars,’ after performing chest compressions on a non-responsive individual in distress at a transit exchange in March.

Szabo was able to perform compressions until paramedics arrived and transported the patient to the hospital, where he made a full recovery.

“For me it felt like seconds, but I was told I was there for a long time. I didn’t quit, the next thing I know, the man gasps,” said Szabo.

Szabo was just wrapping up the night shift.

“I get out (of the bus) to investigate, and a woman yells at me ‘he’s not breathing,’ so I jumped in to action. I have first aid training, so I performed CPR right there on the spot on the bench,” he said.

Every year, BC Transit recognizes excellence and celebrates the Transit Superstars making a positive difference in our regional transit systems across the province.

“These people are the lifeblood of public transportation in BC Transit communities, and it’s our pleasure to honour them as Transit Superstars,” said Tim Croyle, Chief Operating Officer for BC Transit.

“They go above and beyond every day to make a difference with customers and co-workers in their communities, and exemplify BC Transit’s core values.”

Each winner meets one or more of BC Transit’s five core values: community, customer service, innovation, teamwork, and trust & respect.
