The United Nations Peace Flag was raised at Prince George City Hall today (Monday) to recognize the International Day of Peace.
Mayor and Council were joined by members of various rotary clubs for the event.
Rotary International District 5040 Governor, Dave Hamilton spoke with MyPGNow.com.
“Rotary was working with the United Nations when the UN was founded so the UN is a special partner with Rotary International and we also have our own peace initiatives around the world.”
Lyn Hall stated it’s important to honor the efforts made by the United Nations.
“We are seeing a lot of things happening throughout the entire world and I think it gives us an opportunity because the International Day of Peace gives us a time to reflect. Reflect what the world looks like, reflect what we are going through. It’s not just about today (Monday) it’s about every day of the year to reflect what’s going on in our world.”
“Rotary clubs are all about community, they are all about citizens, they are all about working together and really creating things in our community that are long-lasting legacies.”
The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the UN.
There are 49 clubs and over 14-hundred Rotarians in BC.
In 2019-20, Prince George Rotarians volunteered 95-hundred hours and raised 70-thousand dollars for charity groups.
Lorne Calder, who is the from the Rotary Club of Prince George, is the District Governor-Elect and will serve his one-year term in July of 2021, ending in June of 2022.
