Pandemic causes early cancellation of 2021 Iceman

Prince George’s annual Winter Multi-Sport Event, the Iceman has been cancelled 6 months ahead of the projected event date.

“There is just so much planning that goes into it which ordinarily starts about now, we decided to cancel it now and hopefully start planning for the next available date,” said Jim Van Bakel, Registrar of the Iceman.

It would have been the event’s 34th year in the city, which consists of a 10km and 5 km run, 8km cross country ski, 5 km skate and an 800 m swim for individuals and teams.

According to Van Bakel, the Prince George Iceman Society is at a standstill in planning for next year, as it might have to adhere to certain restrictions.

“The hope right now is that we can keep next year’s event the same as it’s always been but that could change.”

The event typically has between 400 to 600 participants, which Van Bakel describes as a ‘far cry’ from what it started out as, with the first few years only having a select number of participants.

“The Iceman has changed quite a bit over the years, especially once the aquatic center was built,” added Van Bekel, “it’s nice to be involved in the really streamlined event.”

He describes the cancellation as a disappointment but claims the decision was unavoidable.
