Rescued animals of the Penticton SPCA are being transferred out of the area, and the Prince George SPCA is ready to take them in if needed.
SPCA Manager of Animal Centre Services, Dr.Alex Schare says, “If we are asked to help then, of course, we will be doing anything to help.”
Around 20 animals from Penticton have already been rushed to the Vernon branch.
“I know the situation is developing in Penticton, as the fires are still developing,” notes Schare, “but currently in Prince George, we have no set plans to take in any animals from Penticton.”
In the 2017 and 2018 wildfire seasons, the PG SPCA set up temporary evacuation centres to rescue animals from closer communities like Williams Lake, Fort. St John and Vanderhoof.
“One year we held an emergency evacuation centre in Dutchess Park School, it’s basically like a pop-up animal shelter and we do have the supplies to set one up very quickly,” adds Schare.
“We have an evacuation plan involving a pop-up animal shelter that has the same housing and animal care standards as the shelter.”
