Less than two weeks after winning silver in Judo at the Canada Games, PG’s own Lavanna Laass takes to the mat again.
This weekend, she enters the BC Judo Pacific International Tournament at the Richmond Olympic Oval.
Judo BC’s Executive Director Katie Thomson says the tournament features athletes from across the country and world.
“It’s a selection event for the national teams, the athletes get points towards being selected to travel with Canada to international events, at this tournament,” she says. “We have athletes coming from two universities in Japan, that both specialize in martial arts.”
Thomson says athletes will also travel from Brazil and the United States.
“Competition ranges from provincial-level competition all the way up to athletes that have participated in international events, such as the Junior World Championships,” she says.
Thomson says this tournament “Will be up there” with some of Laass’ toughest competitions.
“They’re competitive with national championships in some of the big tournaments that happen in the East and Quebec, every year,” she says.
The BC Judo Pacific International Tournament starts Saturday, March 7th at 12:00 p.m. and you can watch a live stream from ViaSport through this link.
