An investigation titled racism in the provincial health care system has been underway for weeks now.
The investigation was launched by former judge and provincial child advocate Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, who was appointed to the task by Health Minister Adrian Dix after allegations of a “guessing game” into the blood-alcohol content of Indigenous patients was reported.
Since the beginning of the investigation on July 9th, a survey with questions regarding individuals’ experiences with racism in their health care careers has been released.
It has received strong support from a number of professional regulatory bodies and unions, including Northern Health Spokesperson in Prince George Eryn Collins.
“We are committed to working with the ministry of health and the investigators,” adds Collins “we would encourage health care workers in the northern health region to participate.”
Turpel Lafond added that the survey will be utilized, “To get a full picture of the impact of racism in the health-care system, it is very important to specifically seek the views of health-care workers.”
The health-care workers’ survey asks for the experiences of a wide range of providers – from physicians, nurses, paramedics and health-sciences professionals, to clerks, cleaning staff and food-services employees.
The survey will remain open until Aug. 27, 2020, and health care workers can access the survey here.
