As the Canada Games draws to a close this weekend, UNBC is wrapping up its “Discovery Centre”.
Though it’s mainly a science-fair-style event designed to show off what the campus has to offer, Events Coordinator Brooke Boswell says there’s something there for the history of the university, as well.
A display situated next to the Discovery Centre features UNBC’s strong aboriginal connection and Boswell says even the university’s coat of arms is full of imagery that most people, including students, don’t know the origins of.
“You have the caribou and the spirit bear, you’ve got the salmon, raven, and orca represented, as well as different landscapes, including the evergreen trees, the mountains, and the wheat, that represents the Peace River and Liard region,” she says. “We also have a very special motto in Carrier Sekani, ‘En cha huna’, it means ‘He or she also lives’.
Also on display are the talking stick and convocation chair, both of which are First Nation in design, representing the agreement UNBC has with the land and life, itself.
The Discovery Centre shuts down Friday at the campus’ library.
