Animal cruelty charges laid against Houston family

Charges of animal cruelty have been approved following an investigation by the SPCA near Houston.

Karin and Catherine Adams have both been charged under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Criminal Code of Canada after several animals were seized from their farm in August.

BC SPCA senior animal protection officer for the region Constable Debbie Goodine says a high number of animals were found in distress.

“There were 18 horses, 18 dogs, 2 cats, 15 birds, and 104 fish,” she says.

The mother and daughter will appear in a Houston courtroom on March 16th.

If convicted, they could face up to five years in jail, a maximum fine of $75,000 and up to a lifetime ban on owning animals.

The animals have since received extensive veterinary care and have been re-homed.
