One local UNBC basketball player was recognized for excellence on and off the court earlier on Wednesday.
UNBC Timberwolves forward Devin McMurtry has been awarded the Canada West Student-Athlete Community, celebrating his community involvement and work ethic.
When asked about his work as a peer tutor for his teammates off the court, he explained how he himself has not always been academically successful:
“I feel like I have made a major transformation in my life, I feel like I have really applied myself the last couple of years. So If I can help them or encourage them to become more serious academically I would feel real great about that because I know it would help the program out a lot”
McMurtry is also a finalist for the Ken Shields award, which is handed out annually to a mens basketball player who exhibits outstanding achievements in academics, community involvement and athletic success.
