Duchess Park hosts the nation for Table Tennis at CWG

Table tennis battles are raging over at Duchess Park Secondary’s gym as part of the Winter Games.

Once the dust has settled, Official Rep – Brad Turner says the Games will actually leave a legacy behind – the tables themselves will go to local high schools

“One being Kelly Road, where we have our club, and the second being Duchess Park, Kelly Road is getting eight tables, Duchess Park is getting four,” he explains.

You might think a simple paddle from your basement is good enough for the sport, but its Turner says there are some strict regulations testing for foam and rubber thickness of the player’s rackets.

“We also test if the racket is under, what we call, ‘racket control’, it’s a more scrutinized test,” He says. “It gets measured by very accurate electronic machines, and it can also test for the volatile compounds used in the glue for the rubbers.”

Turner is also part of the local PG Table Tennis Club, which you can join, anytime.

“We are open to all abilities, 13 and above, and you’re more than welcome to show up for Monday and Wednesday nights, 7 to 9 p.m.,” he says.

It costs $2 per night and for more info, contact Greg Watson at [email protected].
