Weekly earnings in B.C. dropped 0.4% in January making the new average $907.00.
Canada did not fare much better only seeing a 0.4% jump in the past year which is due to the situation in Alberta according to Stats Canada Labour Division Analyst, Andrew Fields.
“A lot of this slow growth is being caused by Alberta’s Mining, Oil and Gas sector. 25,000 fewer people are working there since last year and their weekly earnings are $2000 a week, so the fact we see fewer people in the industry means earnings in Canada as a whole are down.”
Average weekly earnings in Canada is $953.00
The provincial Transportation and Warehouse industry saw the biggest drop at 4.0% followed by declines in construction and public administration.
Despite these declines, average weekly earnings went up in B.C.’s Information and Cultural plus the Health Care and Social Assistance sectors by 5%.
The biggest year-over-year growth in weekly earnings went to Quebec at 2.3% followed by Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.
