City contracts local organization to remove graffiti downtown

The City of Prince George has contracted a local organization to provide free graffiti removal and covering services on private property downtown.

Staff with the POUNDS Project Society started to paint over graffiti last weekend and will be providing service each week to downtown businesses for the next three months.

Representatives also go door-to-door to businesses downtown to offer graffiti removal and covering services to property owners.

The Society has also consulted with Downtown PG to identify and prioritize the areas most in need of these services.

POUNDS has also been contracted to monitor washrooms located in Canada Games Plaza across from the Conference and Civic Centre.

The washrooms were opened in April to provide access for those impacted by the closure of businesses and civic facilities due to COVID-19.

In addition, downtown sidewalks and alleyways were flushed and swept to remove debris, including medical sharps.

In all, an estimated two cubic metres of material was removed.

The operation involved:

  • 3rd Avenue was flushed down both sides of the street from Victoria to Queensway.
  • George Street from 1st Avenue to Fire Hall #1 on 7th Avenue.
  • The west side of Dominion Street from 1st Avenue to 2nd Avenue.
  • 2nd Avenue from Dominion Street to Quebec Street.
  • Alleyways between George Street and Dominion Street from 3rd Avenue to 2nd Avenue.
