For a little over two months many civic facilities have been closed, and other outdoor recreational facilities have not re-opened following winter closures.
However, the City is now ready to begin gradually increasing access to outdoor recreation.
Starting on Friday, gates allowing vehicles to enter Connaught Hill and Nechako Riverside Parks will open for normal summertime hours.
Similarly, the public will be allowed at bike and skate parks, and public tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts.
However, playgrounds and fenced dog parks will remain closed until further notice as they pose challenges to physical distancing, and potentially have shared-touch surfaces.
The City will not be accepting bookings from the public for parks or facilities in 2020.
Sports fields and ball diamonds will also be reopening, however, groups that book them will be required to have an annual rental agreement with the City, as well as a “return-to-play” plan.
The city’s Tennis and Pickleball Clubs have both provided the necessary agreements and plans to city officials.
At its regularly scheduled meeting on June 15, Council will receive an update on other facilities such as Masich Place Stadium, pools, and arenas.
“On behalf of Council, I wish to thank the residents of Prince George for everything you are, and have, been doing to help flatten the curve,” said Mayor Lyn Hall.
