It appears cheap gas prices in Prince George have met their demise.
Covid-19 restrictions are beginning to lift across the province, and the previous record low gas prices are slowly but surely returning to normal.
Prince George saw prices drop as low as 69.9 cents a litre at Costco on April 19th.
Today drivers are paying between 97.9 to 101.9 cents a litre at the pumps, in other words, that’s a whopping increase of roughly 30 cents.
“We are looking at something that is reflected across North America,” said President of Canadians for Affordable Energy Dan McTeague.
“Demand is starting to rise, and refiners have not been as quick to come back online and provide a lot of gasoline. So one of the reasons why is refiners don’t want to be left with inventory they can’t sell, so they are producing just enough to meet demand.”
McTeague says prices will likely go up another three or four cents a litre this week.
“So if you don’t like the prices, bear in mind we’ve gone up about 20 cents a litre since about the 15th-20th of April. We are likely to see another 10 cent increase over the next couple of weeks, perhaps more,” said McTeague.
“It really depends on how soon and how quickly we begin emerging from the (pandemic) and its effect on demand, especially here in BC where we seem to be ahead of the curve.”
Prices in Prince George were approximately $1.15 a litre this time last year, he added.
