Better Together BC creates online cooking challenge to inspire families to eat together

Submitted by Better Together BC.

Better Together BC launched its first-ever Kitchen Hacks Challenge, a video contest open to all BC residents in an effort to bring families together while still maintaining physical distancing restrictions.

Families are challenged to share their best “kitchen hack” by recording a 60-second video and submitting it for the chance to win a $1000 prize.

“This year we evolved the contest, we wanted to make something easier for people to participate in,” said Sydney Massey, Director of Nutrition Education at the BC Dairy Association.

“It can be anything from a recipe, something that is a pre-prepared portion, say you pick up a rotisserie chicken, or something from your pantry, just cans you have on hand, how you have your children help you out, just whatever tip or trick you have that might inspire others,” Massey added.

The contest is open from now until May 22, and for every entry received by the deadline BC’s dairy farmers are donating $100 bucks to Food Banks BC in support of Covid-19 relief efforts.

It replaces the organization’s Hands-on Cook-off contest, which was retired after its tenth anniversary last year.

“We were planning this contest long before we all had to stay at home. Early on we were wondering if even holding a contest was a good idea.”

“But, as the first few weeks passed by we realized ‘ you know what? this is an ideal activity for families to do,’ because people are at home, they are cooking and eating together a little bit more, and have the time to do some fun activities together,” she said.

The winner will be determined by a panel of judges.

“Children seem to do a lot better when their families are eating together,” Massey explained.

“Eating together has far-reaching impacts, from nutrition to mental health.”
