Northern Bear Awareness reminds residents to be vigilant with attractants

Bear sightings in Prince George are picking up as they slowly come out of hibernation.

Dave Bakker is the President of the Northern Bear Awareness Society who states adult males are the first to emerge followed by adolescents and then the females with cubs.

He adds while people are getting antsy to get outside during COVID-19, some precautions need to be taken.

“A lot of people are starting to feel a little bit of cabin fever right now so they are going out and going into the parks taking their pups for a stroll and there again, I think it’s very important that we keep our pets under control.”

Bakker states until more green spaces generate more food sources, we might have some issues during the early part of the year.

A few sightings have been reported in the PG-area over the past few days.

Bakker said our furry friends are slowly getting back into the swing of things.

“They’re very lethargic for about two to three weeks, they’re food intake is very minimal and they are basically looking for easy access food sources.”

“Before bears do start to find our residential waste, is that people start securing their trash before bears find them, it’s very key to reduce the conflict levels and if they don’t find any food they keep moving. That’s very important right now.”
